This is a unique opportunity to shape and develop communication activity for this prestigious local charity, contributing to a variety of communications activities supporting all aspects of the organisation based at our offices on Hornbeam Park, Harrogate.

This fast paced role will be involved in a wide variety of marketing & communications activities to support the relationships with service users, supporters, volunteers, staff and donors. Across a wide range of varied and rewarding projects the successful candidate will research, plan and deliver communications and marketing campaigns to raise awareness, engagement and funding, designing developing and uploading content on websites, blogs, social media and in publications using design skills, facilitating or taking photos and footage as necessary. With other members of the team you will respond to queries from journalists, media organisations and provide support to other departments involved in media or communications activities.

With a recognised marketing or communications based qualification at degree level or Chartered Institute of Marketing, candidates will need experience of a range of communications and marketing activities including advertising, internal communications, issues, crisis management, digital communications, stakeholder engagement. They will need to have developed and implemented communications and marketing plans, writing and designing materials and media releases. The post will require strong IT skills including the use of databases, Microsoft Office, Adobe creative Suite and email marketing platforms. It will also necessitate strong communication skills, creativity, planning, project management, copywriting and organisational skills.

Job Purpose

To use skills, knowledge and experience developed across a wide variety of marketing and communications specialisms, including PR, B2B and B2C marketing, advertising, internal communications, issues management, brand, digital communications, media relations and stakeholder engagement to plan and deliver activity that supports the development of positive relationships with key groups such as our service users, supporters, volunteers, staff and donors.

Key Tasks

1. To research, plan, manage, deliver and evaluate marketing and communications and marketing campaigns to support Saint Michael’s to raise awareness, engagement and funds, both internally and externally.

2. Ensure all activities are managed in line with budgets, negotiating costs at each stage to achieve maximum effective use of resources.

3. To develop, write and upload content for all of Saint Michael’s corporate communication channels including websites, blogs and social media, stakeholder newsletters and publications.

4. To field and respond to queries from journalists, bloggers and PR/ advertising agencies and other media organisations and individuals seeking to work with Saint Michael’s; and to research, write and produce media releases and successfully sell these in to relevant media channels.

5. To use digital tools effectively to support the organisation’s engagement goals and strategy.

6. To use design skills to produce appealing, high quality material in-house to support organisational aims, as well as working with third party designers to produce effective and eye-catching materials.

7. Take or commission photos, footage and audio to support Saint Michael’s campaigns and activities.

8. To build relationships with stakeholders in order to identify real life stories that can be used for communications activities in a sensitive and ethical way that is in line with our values.

9. To support members of Saint Michael’s team involved in media work and provide communication support to other departments and to external organisations as necessary. Work collaboratively across departments with a co-creational approach to planning and implementing projects.

10. To ensure that all campaigns, content and material meet brand guidelines, the law and ethical best practice and to provide support to encourage other teams to meet such guidelines.

11. To work with and support volunteers according to Hospice policies and procedures, to help them make a full contribution to the organisation and the Communications team.

12. To maintain awareness of the activities of competitors and other relevant organisations by attending relevant groups, reading and research.

13. To deliver and develop the organisation’s community engagement programme.

Essential Education and Qualifications

Recognised communications based qualification at degree level or above.

Essential Experience

Experience of developing, implementing and delivering communications and marketing plans, both internal and external, to support organisational aims.
Experienced in writing, designing and producing on and offline marketing communications materials for organisational campaigns.
Experience in writing and distributing attention-grabbing media releases and pitching stories and partnerships to media.
Experience across the breadth of communications and marketing specialisms including PR, B2B and B2C marketing, advertising, internal communications, issues management, brand, digital communications, media relations and stakeholder engagement.

Essential Knowledge and skills


Strong IT skills, including use of databases, Microsoft Office and Powerpoint/Prezi and design related software packages, such as Indesign, Photoshop or Illustrator.
Experience of using CMS systems to maintain and update websites and blogs.
Experience of using social media to meet specific business objectives.
Experience of email marketing platforms.
Understanding of digital best practice principles when it comes to marketing and communications.
Knowledge of all current laws relating to communications such as data protection and copyright.
Experience of the taking of photos and making of videos to support PR and marketing activity.
Good understanding of integrated marketing communications theory and practice.
Good understanding of B2B and B2C marketing theory and practice.
Good understanding of issues management theory and best practice.
Good understanding of importance of brand strategy to a charity.
