Befriending, sitting and driving services

Herriot’s range of volunteer-led community services are delivered by trained and supported volunteers, and available to anyone over 18 years of age living with terminal illness across Hambleton and Richmondshire.

Herriot’s befriending, sitting and driving volunteer-led services provide reliable social and emotional support to people in their own homes. Volunteer support can range from help with simply being there and listening to a short drive or walk out. Volunteers can also assist with light practical tasks such as gardening, or a lift to an appointment.

This support also allows carers to take a valuable break, helping them to feel confident that they can continue their caring role for as long as possible.

A befriending, sitting or driving volunteer can be sourced for anybody who has been affected by terminal illness – this could be a carer or a patient to support with isolation. All volunteers are fully trained and are supported by a range of Herriot specialists. They are supervised by members of the patient care team and are thoroughly checked by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

You can be referred by any healthcare professional by email or telephone. Once referred, we will arrange a home visit so that we can assess how the service is able to meet your needs.

The service is part of Herriot’s Wellbeing Network – a range of services to support practical, social, emotional, physical and spiritual needs. Our team work together with you and professionals involved in your care to offer a package of support that helps people live with confidence, independence and dignity.
