Inside our Masham community shop
Located at the heart of Masham, our bustling shop is a popular spot for sustainable second-hand shopping helping us to raise money for local people living with terminal illness and bereavement.
Over the last five years, Pat Mischenko has firmly established our Masham shop as a hub within the local community and a fabulous place to find high-quality pre-loved items. Here she shares what she enjoys about her role…
“I’m a very sociable person and love seeing our wonderfully loyal customers who pop into our shop regularly to browse and say hello. At the heart of the busy market town of Masham, our customers range from friendly residents and local farming folk, to the many tourists who visit our town’s bustling festivals.
“I’m proud to know that our little shop has a great reputation in the community, both for offering a warm welcome and an impressive range of products, including from sought-after brands. Most of our business is from word of mouth!
“I find the role very satisfying. Sorting out bags of generous donations feels like Christmas every day and I love the challenge of looking for fresh ways to display our stock to catch people’s attention.
“One of my highlights of being part of the Herriot community was my fundraising challenge to complete the longest, faster zip wire in Wales. It was so much fun and I look forward to taking on more challenges to help raise money for Herriot in the future.
“If you’re a people-orientated, team-player who likes to be organised and make a difference in the local community, this is the role for you.”

“Each volunteer within my team has their own unique strengths: whether it’s identifying valuable items, creatively arranging our displays or developing a rapport with our customers, they all contribute to making our Masham shop a fabulous place to work and shop.
Among our fantastic shop volunteers is Tina. After retiring from her career as a nurse, Tina has enjoyed the company of her fellow team members and getting to know the local community while volunteering with us.
“Once I retired and moved to Masham, I was keen to get to know people and do some volunteering without the responsibility of my previous paid role. Helping out in our local Masham Herriot Hospice Homecare shop has been a fabulous opportunity to meet others and be sociable.
“I love interacting with customers, hearing which items they’re interested in and catching up with out regulars. There’s always a buzz when they make a purchase which will help contribute to the care and support Herriot provides.
“Pat, our shop manager, and the rest of our team are fantastic people who run the shop in an organised and professional manner- it’s a pleasure to volunteer here.”
