People urged to make or amend their will in hospice scheme

People from across Hambleton and Richmondshire are being urged to make or amend their will in support of a local hospice initiative this October.

Herriot Hospice Homecare’s Make a Will Month sees local participating solicitors waive their usual fees to allow people to make a will or amend a current will throughout October. People who take part can then donate to Herriot, supporting local people living with terminal illness and bereavement.

Make a Will Month is open to anyone aged 18 and over, and the scheme allows participants to make a basic or mirror will with a participating solicitor of their choice – which can cost between £190 and £350.

The initiative also gives people the opportunity to leave a gift in their will to the charity, allowing them to provide care and support to people who need it most in the years to come. One in five people Herriot Hospice Homecare cares for is supported by a gift left in a will.

Andrea Lavery made a will as part of the charity’s campaign last year. She said: “Wills and taking care of those close to you are incredibly important. We knew we would be able to rest easy if our wishes were prepared and legally written.

“The care and support Herriot provides to people living with terminal illness and bereavement across Hambleton and Richmondshire is invaluable, and having the opportunity to take part in Make a Will Month and support our local hospice was important to us.

“Our experience of making the will with the solicitor was positive, easy and understandable, and I recommend anyone to take part and support Herriot Hospice Homecare. It was a huge weight lifted for us.”

Chief Executive Tony Collins said: “We are extremely grateful to local solicitors who are generously supporting us as part of our Make a Will Month, meaning we can offer people across Hambleton and Richmondshire the opportunity to make or amend their will in a safe, quick and rewarding way, all while making a valued donation.

“Whether people are amending their will due to significant life changes or making a one for the first time, by taking part in Make a Will Month and making a donation, we can continue supporting our local communities who are living with terminal illness and bereavement.

“Make a Will Month appointments are limited, and we’re encouraging people who would like to take part to register their interest as soon as possible.”
