Becky for Prime Minister

Becky Wallis, one of our charity shop managers, recently spoke at the House of Commons.

Becky was one of only five apprentices from across the UK chosen to speak at an event organised by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI).

The CMI have just launched a new apprenticeship scheme and asked other learning providers to put forward people who could speak positively about the benefits of National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ).

Becky, 23, who is currently doing an NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Management whilst working as Manager of Herriot Hospice Homecare’s charity shop in Northalleton, was recommended to CMI by her tutor and on reading her case study, she was invited to speak in London about her experience.

Becky spoke in front of an audience twice, once at a conference at the CMI offices in London and again later the same day in the Members’ Dining Room at the House of Commons.

She said: “It’s hard to find the words to describe speaking in the House of Commons, apart from it was amazing, absolutely amazing.

“I have never been so nervous, yet so excited, before. I kept going from extremely nervous to exploding with excitement.

“It was a day I will never forget. My manager Kathryn Harrison was so supportive and helped me through every stage of the day and kept me calm when I was nervous.

“As a 23-year-old single parent speaking in the House of Commons was something I never expected to happen, and a day I will never forget. It was amazing to be the person to be able to talk about Herriot Hospice Homecare in such an historic setting.”

Becky says she is looking forward to completing her NVQ.

She added: “I have no idea what the future holds for me. I will be spending my time looking after my gorgeous daughter Ella, whilst working and helping the charity as much as I can. I can't wait to see what other amazing opportunities arise.”

Kathryn Harrison, Herriot Hospice Homecare’s Head of Income, said: “We are all so proud of Becky. She did a wonderful job and it was fantastic to hear Herriot Hospice Homecare being spoken about in the House of Commons.

“Becky is a perfect example of the kind of person we have working for Herriot; she is a real rising star.”
