Celebrity TV vet Peter Wright is to be a new ambassador for North Yorkshire hospice care charity, Herriot Hospice Homecare.Peter, best known for his regular appearances on Channel 5’s award winning documentary series, The Yorkshire Vet and a much loved vet in his hometown of Thirsk for 40 years has been an active supporter and fundraiser for the Thirsk-based charity for many years.
Viewers of the show have seen him recently taking part in fundraising events which included a 170-mile coast to coast cycle ride and a tractor run, raising funds to help open the charity’s new hospice in Thirsk – Herriot Hospice@The Lambert.
As an ambassador, Peter will formally work with Herriot Hospice Homecare to continue raising awareness and support for the charity as it opens its doors to Herriot Hospice@The Lambert, which will also provide a base for the charity’s expanding home service – providing end of life care close to their home.
Peter said: “I’m very proud to be an ambassador for Herriot Hospice Homecare because helping families across Hambleton and Richmondshire living with terminal illness and bereavement is a cause very close to my heart.
“Our new hospice means local people will be able to see their loved ones whenever they want – with fantastic services, counselling, support and care available on our doorstep for families at very difficult times. This is in addition to the vital and expanding services the charity already offers in the community to people in need in their own homes.
“Herriot Hospice@The Lambert is a priceless gift to our communities. I can’t thank Herriot hospice services enough for what they are doing – becoming an ambassador is my way of supporting this vital local charity, so that it is there for all of us now and in the future.”
Tony Collins, Herriot Hospice Homecare Chief Executive, said: “We’re delighted Peter is working with us as an official ambassador of Herriot Hospice Homecare, building on his longstanding support – which most recently involved a coast-to-coast cycle ride for Herriot Hospice@The Lambert, raising more than £36,000.
“Alongside our existing and dedicated ambassadors, Dr Rosie Page and Countess Charlotte Peel, Peter will continue his fantastic work in raising public awareness of the care and support we provide across Hambleton and Richmondshire.”
The new hospice, based at the former Lambert Memorial Hospital in Thirsk, will offer personalised care and support for people in Hambleton and Richmondshire living with terminal illness, and their families.
The building will house a six-bed inpatient unit, community hub, specialist bereavement and emotional wellbeing support and provide a permanent base for the charity’s well-established HOME service.
Once open, the new facility will enable Herriot Hospice Homecare to support an additional 500 people each year. Currently people have to travel 30 miles or more to access hospice inpatient hospice care.
