With help from our Breathing Space team, Roz Thompson has been able to manage her breathlessness from emphysema and lung cancer to get out in her beloved garden again.
“Before receiving help from Herriot Hospice Homecare, I was really struggling with being out of breath. Even the couple of steps from my bedroom to kitchen was unmanageable.
“My consultant referred me to Herriot’s Breathing Space service and I’ve since had sessions with Dr Bethan, Elaine and Corrien.
“Each of the team have been absolutely fantastic. They’ve shown me exercises that I can do to breathe more easily and clear my lungs from mucus. They patiently demonstrated and I’ve watched and listened before practicing myself.
“They’re all so lovely- after a few sessions, they felt just like friends and I looked forward to seeing them.
“Anything I’ve mentioned, they got straight onto. They’ve been so on the ball.
“Because of the techniques they’ve shown me and the help they’ve given, I’ve been able to walk to my kitchen again, make my own tea and eat a bit more. The best thing of all is managing to walk up my drive to my garden, which I haven’t been able to do for six months!
“I love my garden and it’s been brilliant to get out into the fresh air and enjoy my plants. Gardening is my main hobby and I’m so glad to get to see my colourful flowers after all this time.
“Top marks! Breathing Space is absolutely marvelous and has made such a difference. I’m so grateful to Herriot Hospice Homecare for all they’ve done for me. I feel very lucky.

“I’ve been spreading the word on what a wonderful charity you are in the local area.
“Everyone knows how fantastic Herriot’s Stokesley charity shop is- it’s always well stocked and in a great location. The staff are so nice- I’ve even made friends with a few of them. I have been pleased to donate items to them previously.
“Now I’m telling everyone how raising money there can help people.
“Back in the day, I trained as a nurse, but it’s amazing to see how far hospice care has come with services like Breathing Space.
“Having Breathing Space at Herriot Hospice@The Lambert will be wonderful for our community.
Our Herriot Breathing Space service is currently supported by Humber and North Yorkshire Cancer Alliance. Across our charity however, 75% of our services are funded by the generosity of our community. You can help us bring care to more people in the future by pledging a gift in your will.
