Herriot Way Challenge
24th September 2022

On Saturday 24th September take on our brand-new challenge event based on the Herriot Way to help raise funds for our new hospice in Thirsk. Our new facility will help us to care for an additional 500 people in Hambleton and Richmondshire each year.

Whether you are taking on the marathon, half marathon or 4-mile walking route, you will be making a real difference to local families, ensuring they can get the right care, at the right time in the right place.

We're partnering with Large Outdoors on this challenge, so you will have guides on the day to help keep you on track and have an amazing experience whilst raising funds for a special cause.

Route options:

‘Marathon’ 26 mile - Reeth to Hawes (via Aysgarth) - 914m ascent.

Registration Time: 06:30am-07.00am, Challenge Briefing Time, 07:05, Coach Depart Time: 07:15

From Reeth the route leaves Swaledale and climbs across the moors back into Wensleydale, on the edge of Harkerside Moor. The Herriot Way uses good tracks to gain height gently and then cuts through the heather on Whitaside Moor, into Apedale. Another good track leads the Way down the valley, later passing the impressive ramparts of Bolton Castle and the lovely Aysgarth Falls.

The Way then heads north out of Aysgarth, down to the River Ure alongside wide meadows, following a disused railway track into Askrigg. The route then travels down the Wensleydale valley along secluded lanes to Hardraw, before a final wander through fields leads into Hawes.

‘Half Marathon’ 12 mile - Aysgarth to Hawes - 274m ascent.

Registration Time: 08:30-09:00, Challenge Briefing Time: 09:05, Coach Depart time: 09:15

The Herriot Way heads north out of this Dales village, down to the River Ure alongside wide meadows, following a disused railway track into Askrigg. The route then travels down the Wensleydale valley along secluded lanes to Hardraw, before a final wander through fields leads into Hawes.

4 mile - Hawes circular - 112m ascent

Registration time: 10:00-10:30 and Challenge Briefing Time:10:35

This valley-side walk provides beautiful vistas of Dales scenery. The route heads out of Hawes, over Haylands Bridge, continuing towards Hardraw village. It then climbs quite steeply uphill - with fantastic views south across Wensleydale - and along to Sedbusk before returning to Hawes.

Please note: distances and ascent figures are approximate. All routes are unsuitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs. All routes include use of stiles (which may included squeeze, ladder and step varieties) and gates.

Registration fees:
